ANNA (Naranja) ART

by NaranjaRa
i have a life-long background in the visual arts and have made my living doing web design, graphics, photography...even architectural renderings. however, long before the mouse became a permanent part of my anatomy, i used to do detailed nature drawings, photo montage work, paintings, and various mixed media pieces on handmade papers. i still do design work for clients but am on a different mission at this point in my life. i still dabble in this & that and am currently setting up a studio so that i have space to get back to using my hands again.

I do a lot of nail art now, too. :)

MIXED MEDIA / MONTAGE -- Updated 05.19.16
Spoiler: show
This is a series entitled, 'Elements'. These were created from various dolls and odds & ends that were first "montaged" onto large boards for backdrops, then photographed in-studio onto 4x5" slide film positives. There is one for each of the 4 elements, Earth,Air, Fire, and Water. Though the boards have long since been destroyed the original source transparencies remain, along with a few color prints and the original test-Polaroids. This work is still considered unfinished / in-progress.

I have the B&W Polaroids and photographs of large-format prints for all except "Water"...

------------------------------------------------------

This is a 4-part series called, 'Eden: The Board Game.' This is an older piece created from photos of dolls exposed with liquid light onto various handmade papers, then montaged with painting and other materials. A lot of my work explores duality, especially in regards to the sexes and gender roles.

Image

------------------------------------------------------

Part of a sculptural/montage/video/installation, "Once Upon a Primetime". This involved creating handmade dolls / puppets that were fully poseable and had interchangeable wardrobes. I outlined the plot and used a storyboard to help compose the images I wanted to use for each part of the tale. I was then able to pose the characters according to what was laid out in the storyboards and photograph them in-studio. I also drew and painted some backgrounds and other objects, along with gathering photographs to serve as other parts of the storyboard. Once all of the parts were created, found, and/or photographed, the images were montaged and assembled in Photoshop. The resulting images were then made into a short still-film complete with narration and music, transferred to analog VHS and played on a loop on a giant television set in the gallery while viewers sat on the floor and colored along in coloring books created from images in the story.

Wow... Amazing!
Have I ever asked you what the obsession with oranges is about??

Posted: Wed Mar 30, 2016 2:34 pm
by NaranjaRa
*bows* thanks luv!! <3

um, hmmmm....the orange thing. hahaha well it's weird to explain, and really dorky to be honest. but here goes:

i've always been into color symbolism, and in some places orange is the color of seeking knowledge, of genius. not that i consider myself to be this at all. i just respect the idea. a reminder to strive for mental strength. so i adopted it as a bit of a favorite color secretly decades ago in my teens (yes, i r old..Er.).

later would come certain instances of orange in entertainment media...most important being the oranges that seem to foretell danger in the Godfather series of films. in some cultures, orange signifes danger. duh...think of bright "safety orange" roadcrews and you've got it.

flash forward to the series Lost, that i became quite obsessed with. the character John Locke does this thing with an orange in his mouth in the pilot episode:

Image

from that point on, the writers used the color orange, oranges, or orange juice to signify some kind of trouble coming. as i grew more obsessed with the show i started theorizing about it in forums and chats. i adopted the theme of orange as my online persona and started going by "Anna Naranja" (orange in Spanish). thus began the orange-headed avatars....there are probably close to 75-80 or so in my library. i grew a little following on my blog, and when i went to my first Comic Con in 2008, i dyed my hair bright orange so my friends could find me easily in the crowd. totally worked, as i stood in the middle of the exhibit-hall floor, surrounded by thousands, when i head this tiny voice go, "...Anna?".

after that, it just sorta stuck. i've been the Orange for about 10 years now...lol Image

lurky lurk lurking. So much to look at.

Your signatures are downright beautiful. I don't have nails but I know some females that would be jealous of those nails.

So far (I need to stress so far because I haven't seen everything), my favorite are the photos of landscapes. The cactus cross has been holding my attention for some reason.

bless u for the kind words! that tree is a Joshua Tree...and a coyote led me to it. i was driving through the dessert and this guy was just standing in the middle of the road, totally unafraid of the vehicle. so i got out of the car and the coyote started trotting into the sand...so i followed. he would get a ways ahead of me, then stop and look back to see if i was still behind him. i didn't want to go too far, because it's insanely easy to get lost in the dessert if you don't keep your eye on landmarks. i also worried he was leading me back to his pack for dinner...as in, i was dinner...lol. so after a little ways i just stopped and he stopped and looked at me. i looked around and BLAM, there was this tree in a perfect cross formation. it was a neat moment. :)

soooo my friend bought me a "color your own" Batman cowl....kinda silly, right? but then it struck me that i can do ANYthing i want to this badboy...including adding embellishments and accessories. basically i can turn this into a piece of Art. :)

Image

i'd like to post the progress here and welcome feedback / crit. this is the first time i've worked on a "real" project that is NOT on the computer in forever; i've not really even touched paints in probably 20 years. therefore i am using this as an exercise in loosening back up again...like doing stretches. i'm not going by any plans but rather just doing what comes to me, as it comes...in good ol' fashioned stream-of-consciousness style. i suppose it's also an exercise in confidence. the head is a challenge to keep from slipping. it's a challenge to work over the curves and angles of the surface. one thing i remember being made aware of in school was that we (artists) have to be creative problem solvers. if i make a mistake or the pen slips, i have to figure out a way to either fix it, hide it, or make something new of it. and this definitely keeps coming into play...lol. some of what i've done so far will surely be changed significantly over time.

i'm currently laying down a base design using sharpies and prismacolor colored pencils.

the progress on that thing is incredible. I would have never ever thought it could even go in that direction just looking at the blank head.
