It's a compliment you say,
I say no thanks.
When will you understand
your passive aggressive
put down of who I am,
it doesn't fly over here.

Keep that raggedy ass compliment.
You mad that my complexion
Glistens when the sun shines
down on me?
Do you wish to attain this level
of chocolatey goodness?

Passed down from my ancestors,
You cannot break me.
I stand proud in my skin.
The celebration of who I am.
Keep your pathetic little compliment.
It's really not needed.

Make sure to address me
Correct next time you see me.
For I am not a
Cute for a dark skin girl.
I am a...

I love this poem! Illustrates everything wrong with shithead basic male perception and outlines girl power at its most sexiness and raw!!!

I enjoyed that a lot. I hope you have more stuff in Lit or are at least thinking about it. You've got some awesome talent there :D

Thanks everyone! This literally was something that popped in my head so I decided to just go and share it here. I love writing and being creative. It's just me! Whether writing, dancing, redoing some ones crib, I love anything where I can be creative and express myself. Or help some one else express their concept

Beautiful Nubian Princess,

My hope is that we will see more like this soon. You are a truly gifted writer. I enjoy the more subtle nuances of the form, and diction. I wanted this to be bumped up higher in Lit. It's beautiful. I hope this extra reply gets you even one more admirer. Truly someone to admire, ImmaculateStilleto.

oh wow i'm so glad that you shared this, ImmaculateStiletto...and glad i just stumbled upon it!

the piece brought 2 things to mind:

for one, it immediately made me think of a similar type of compliment. curvier, plumper ladies are often told, "you have such a pretty face." i'd never heard of the "cute for a dark skin girl" variation before. just another example of how discrimination can surface in some truly passive-aggressive ways. to me, these kinds of underhanded phrases (dog-whistles) can more insidious than more blatant displays of prejudice because they sit below the surface and sink into people's subconscious without them even realizing what is truly being communicated. and without awareness, bias and bigotry continue to flourish.
but hey at least it's a compliment! /62

so yeah, i love you for pointing this one out and making us aware.

second, this poem made me consider a completely new topic, the Irony of Skin.

ImmaculateStiletto wrote:I stand proud in my skin.

our skin is our largest, and some would say most important organ. it protects us. keeps us safe. makes us whole.
yet it to this day remains a source of so much pain and suffering.
and so i meditated on this for awhile, and will continue to do so as i feel there is even more with this to explore.

so i also thank you for the inspiration. /star

OH...and LOL at Aiice's "age like milk" analogy...
it's funny cuz it's true/rotfl
